Paragon is an active manager which invests in established Australian companies in a range of sectors including manufacturing, sustainability, mining services, new media, biotechnology, transport, electronics, information technology, defense, food and retail. The firm typically seeks to invest AUD 1-5 million in companies with a proven product or service, a turnover of AUD 2-50 million and a competitive advantage (a brand, technology or market niche). They are often the number one or two company in their defined region and industry sector and are seeking to grow, either organically or through acquisition. Paragon provides additional private equity of up to AUD 5 million and can work with other investors for larger amounts. They partner with their investee companies, generally appointing one or two members from Paragon or their networks in the industry sector to their boards of directors. The firm does not try to manage their investee businesses, but seeks to create wealth and generally works to achieve a substantial capital gain, rather than pursuing a dividend stream. They look for a clear path to an exit, typically through a trade sale or an IPO in three to five years. Paragon's internal investment committee makes the firm's investment decisions.
