The European Commission said that Apple's Ads and Maps services shouldn't be designated as core platforms for business users under its Digital Markets Act.
The European Union's executive arm said the features don't constitute an important gateway for businesses to reach end users, closing a review into whether they should adhere to the DMA's rulebook for the world's largest technology companies.
"This assessment is based on a number of considerations, including that Apple Maps has a relatively low overall usage rate in the EU, and that Apple Ads has very limited scale in the online advertising sector in the EU," the commission said in a statement Thursday.
Apple submitted those services for the commission to review under its digital competition rulebook in November.
"The commission will continue to monitor market developments regarding these services, should any substantial changes arise," the watchdog said, adding that its decision Thursday doesn't affect Apple's prior designation as a gatekeeper under the DMA due to other services it runs, such as its App Store and iOS operating system.
"We welcome the European Commission's decisions regarding Apple Maps and Apple Ads. These services face significant competition in Europe, and we're pleased the Commission recognized they do not meet the criteria for designation under the DMA. We remain committed to delivering incredible services and experiences across the EU with the best privacy and security protections," Apple said.
